What is n-Butyl Methacrylate?
n-Butyl Methacrylate, also known as n-BMA or Butyl Methacrylate, is a clear, colourless liquid methacrylate monomer. It is the n-butyl ester of methacrylic acid and is identified by CAS number 97-88-1 and EC number 202-615-1.
It is widely used as a building block in the production of acrylic polymers and copolymers. n-Butyl Methacrylate can improve flexibility, adhesion, weather resistance, water resistance and impact performance in finished polymer systems.
Commercial material is normally supplied with a polymerisation inhibitor. Heat, contamination or loss of inhibitor may cause unwanted polymerisation, so the product must be stored and handled according to the applicable Safety Data Sheet.
Coatings & Paints
Used as a reactive monomer in acrylic coatings, industrial paints, automotive coatings and protective finishes.
Adhesives & Sealants
Used in acrylic adhesives, pressure-sensitive adhesives, sealants and bonding formulations to improve flexibility and adhesion.
Textile & Leather Finishing
Used in polymer emulsions and coating systems for textile treatment, synthetic leather and surface finishing.
Printing Inks
Used in selected resin and binder systems for printing inks and related graphic applications.
Acrylic Resins & Polymers
Used in the manufacture of acrylic resins, copolymers and polymer dispersions for industrial and specialty applications.
Plastics & Modifiers
Used as a comonomer and impact-modifying component in selected plastics and polymer systems.

Export and customs documentation support
Dangerous-goods transport documentation available
We supply n-Butyl Methacrylate internationally in drums, IBCs, road tanks and ISO tanks.
The product should be stored in a cool, dry and well-ventilated place away from heat, ignition sources, direct sunlight, oxidising agents and polymerisation initiators. Inhibitor effectiveness may depend on suitable storage conditions and sufficient dissolved oxygen.
Our logistics team supports customers with product documentation, dangerous-goods paperwork, export documentation, customs coordination and suitable international transport arrangements.
What is n-Butyl Methacrylate used for?
n-Butyl Methacrylate is used as a monomer in acrylic resins, coatings, adhesives, sealants, plastics, printing inks, polymer dispersions and specialty chemical formulations.
Is n-Butyl Methacrylate the same as Butyl Acrylate?
No. n-Butyl Methacrylate is the butyl ester of methacrylic acid, while Butyl Acrylate is the butyl ester of acrylic acid. Their polymerisation behaviour and final polymer properties are different.
Why is n-Butyl Methacrylate stabilised?
A polymerisation inhibitor is added to reduce the risk of unwanted polymerisation during storage and transport. The product should only be used under suitable process controls.
Is n-Butyl Methacrylate flammable?
Yes. n-Butyl Methacrylate is a flammable liquid and must be stored and handled according to the applicable Safety Data Sheet.
Is n-Butyl Methacrylate soluble in water?
It is only slightly soluble in water but dissolves readily in many common organic solvents.
Is n-Butyl Methacrylate available with different inhibitor levels?
Yes. Standard and customised inhibitor levels may be available depending on the producer, application, quantity and destination.
