Phthalic Anhydride Production
Used as a key raw material in the production of phthalic anhydride, which is further used in plasticizers, resins and coatings.
Rotterdam Chemicals Group supplies high-quality Ortho-Xylene for use in chemical manufacturing, phthalic anhydride production, coatings, solvents, resins and industrial formulations.
Ortho-Xylene can be supplied internationally in drums, IBCs, road tanks and bulk quantities, depending on the required specification, packaging, volume and destination. Product, safety and transport documentation is available with each shipment.
Ortho-Xylene, also known as o-Xylene or 1,2-Dimethylbenzene, is a clear, colourless aromatic hydrocarbon liquid with a characteristic solvent odour. It is one of the three xylene isomers, together with meta-xylene and para-xylene.
Ortho-Xylene is identified by CAS number 95-47-6 and EC number 202-422-2. It is widely used as a solvent and as an important chemical intermediate, especially in the production of phthalic anhydride.
Because Ortho-Xylene is flammable and hazardous, it must be stored and handled according to the applicable Safety Data Sheet.

We supply Ortho-Xylene internationally in drums, IBCs, road tanks and bulk quantities.
Ortho-Xylene should be stored in tightly closed containers in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area. It should be kept away from heat, sparks, open flames, oxidising agents and other incompatible materials.
Our logistics team supports customers with product documentation, dangerous-goods paperwork, export documentation, customs coordination and suitable international transport arrangements.
What is Ortho-Xylene used for?
Ortho-Xylene is used as a solvent and chemical intermediate. Its main industrial use is in the production of phthalic anhydride, but it is also used in coatings, resins, adhesives, inks and industrial solvent applications.
Is Ortho-Xylene an aromatic hydrocarbon?
Yes. Ortho-Xylene is an aromatic hydrocarbon and should be listed under Aromatics & Hydrocarbons on the Rotterdam Chemicals Group website.
Is Ortho-Xylene the same as mixed xylene?
No. Mixed xylene is a mixture of xylene isomers, usually including ortho-xylene, meta-xylene, para-xylene and sometimes ethylbenzene. Ortho-Xylene is one specific xylene isomer.
Is Ortho-Xylene flammable?
Yes. Ortho-Xylene is a flammable liquid and must be stored and handled according to the applicable Safety Data Sheet.
Is Ortho-Xylene soluble in water?
Ortho-Xylene is practically insoluble in water but is soluble in many organic solvents.
Is Ortho-Xylene available in bulk?
Yes. Ortho-Xylene can be supplied in drums, IBCs, road tanks and bulk quantities, depending on availability, destination and order volume.
