What is Chloroform?
Chloroform, also known as trichloromethane, is a clear, colourless and volatile chlorinated liquid with a characteristic sweet odour. It has the molecular formula CHCl₃ and is identified by CAS number 67-66-3 and EC number 200-663-8.
It is mainly used as a solvent, extraction medium and chemical intermediate. Chloroform offers good solvency for many organic compounds but requires controlled handling because of its hazardous properties.
