Monopropylene glycol — usually shortened to MPG, and also sold as propylene glycol or PG — is one of those quietly essential ingredients that turns up everywhere: in the soft centre of a cake, in the flavour carrier of a soft drink, in cattle feed, in cosmetics, and in aircraft de-icing fluid. It is the same core molecule in all of these (chemical name propane-1,2-diol, CAS number 57-55-6). What changes from one application to the next is not the molecule itself but the grade — the purity, the documentation, and the rules the product was made and shipped under.
Two of the grades that get confused most often are food grade and feed grade. They sound close, and in casual conversation people use the terms loosely. But ordering one when you needed the other can mean a rejected delivery, a failed audit, or a product that can't legally go where you intended. It helps to start with what isn't different. Food grade and feed grade MPG are the same chemical compound. Both are clear, colourless, slightly syrupy liquids that mix easily with water, hold onto moisture, and dissolve a wide range of flavours and other ingredients. If you put two unlabelled samples side by side, you generally couldn't tell them apart by looking.
The difference is in everything that surrounds the molecule. Think of it less like two different products and more like two different certifications of the same product. Each grade is made, tested, documented, and handled to satisfy a particular set of rules — one written for human food, the other for animal feed. The grade is really a promise about purity and traceability backed by a specific standard.
Food grade MPG is the version cleared for use in food and drink. In practice it overlaps heavily with pharmaceutical (USP/EP) grade, and many suppliers treat food grade as meeting the Food Chemical Codex (FCC) alongside the major pharmacopoeia standards. It is a very high-purity material — typically 99.5% or higher, with pharmaceutical USP grade reaching around 99.8%.

You'll find food grade MPG working as a humectant (keeping baked goods soft), a carrier for flavours and colours, and a stabiliser that stops ingredients separating in things like dressings, drinks, and ice cream.
Feed grade MPG is cleared for use in animal feed rather than human food. The chemistry is the same, and the purity is still high, but it is produced and certified against the standards that govern feed materials instead of the human-food rulebook.
In Europe and the UK, the relevant assurance scheme is FEMAS — the Feed Materials Assurance Scheme. A product registered under FEMAS has been independently assessed for the things that matter in the feed supply chain: traceability, contamination control, and safe handling all the way to the farm. Propylene glycol is an authorised feed material, and notably, when it's used in animal feed it is not labelled with an E-number the way it is in human food.
In livestock, MPG has a genuinely useful nutritional role beyond just being a carrier — it is best known in dairy cattle, where it's used to help manage the energy shortfall that can hit high-yielding cows after calving. That's a feed-nutrition function, which is exactly why the feed-specific standards exist around it.

The single most important takeaway: the grade is defined by the standard it's certified to and the supply chain it travelled through, not by some visible difference in the liquid. A food-grade delivery comes with the paperwork and handling history that lets it legally enter the human food chain. A feed-grade delivery comes with feed-chain assurance. You can't substitute one for the other just because the molecule is identical, because what your customer, your auditor, and the regulator care about is the certification and the chain of custody.
Because "MPG" and "propylene glycol" cover several grades, requests often arrive under-specified. Someone asks for "propylene glycol" when they actually need food grade, or assumes feed grade and food grade are interchangeable because both are "high purity." They're both clean — but clean isn't the whole specification. Buying down a grade can leave you unable to prove compliance for your application; buying up a grade can mean paying for documentation and handling you didn't need.
The fix is simple and worth building into every enquiry: state the application (human food, or animal feed), the standard you need it certified to (FCC/USP/EP, or FEMAS), and confirm the documentation will come with the delivery. Those three details remove almost all the ambiguity.
Choose food grade MPG if the end product is consumed by people — food, beverages, flavour systems — or if you need the broader food/pharma compliance that food grade carries.
Choose feed grade MPG if the end product is animal feed and you need feed-chain assurance such as FEMAS, rather than human-food certification.
