Paints & Coatings
Used as a thinner for oil-based paints, varnishes, and alkyd systems.
Rotterdam Chemicals Group supplies Mineral Spirits D40, a fast-evaporating aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent widely used in cleaning, paint thinning, and degreasing applications. Produced from petroleum distillates and refined to minimize aromatics (≤0.1 wt%), Mineral Spirits D40 is trusted across paints, coatings, automotive, and maintenance sectors. We deliver globally from Rotterdam, with full technical support and documentation.
Mineral Spirits D40 (also called ShellSol D40 or Exxsol D40) is a dearomatized white spirit solvent composed primarily of C7–C12 alkanes. Compared with higher-numbered grades (D60–D80), D40 offers a lower flash point (~36–46 °C) and a narrower boiling range (~145–200 °C). These properties make it the preferred choice where fast evaporation, effective degreasing, and reduced odour are critical.

Rotterdam Chemicals Group stocks Mineral Spirits D40 in Rotterdam for rapid dispatch to customers worldwide. With multimodal transport options (road, sea, bulk), we ensure timely delivery, complete customs documentation, and DG declarations for seamless supply chain integration.
What’s the main difference between D40 and higher grades like D70 or D80?
D40 evaporates faster and has a lower flash point, while higher grades evaporate slower and provide longer drying times.
Is Mineral Spirits D40 flammable?
Yes. With a flash point around 36–46 °C, D40 must be handled as a flammable liquid under ADR/IMDG/ICAO regulations.
Can Mineral Spirits D40 be used for cleaning electronics?
No. It is intended for mechanical parts and metal surfaces, not for sensitive or energized electronics.
Is it completely odorless?
No. It is classified as low odor. Some mild solvent scent may be noticeable depending on the application.
